Trump Government to Distribute 50% Food Stamp Funds in November

The US administration stated it would supply limited support to numerous nutritional assistance recipients as the protracted federal closure reached a record-breaking period.

Benefit Decrease Details

Amid growing concern for the nearly 42 million Americans participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Department of Agriculture declared it would use emergency funds to sustain benefits, though at merely 50% of the usual level recipients normally obtain.

Money for the program legally ended on Saturday due to the US government shutdown, now in its 34th day with little indication of completion.

Legal Proceedings

The decision came in a judicial submission after earlier rejections to issue emergency funding on alleged legal grounds. A federal judge had decided the government could not withhold program funds because of the shutdown.

After the court order, the administration declared it would be "honored" to authorize vital funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Authorities noted that money could start flowing by midweek, but highlighted the need for more guidance from the courts on how to lawfully transfer resources for SNAP assistance.

  • Several authorities have indicated it will take multiple days or even longer periods to distribute funds to low-income recipients.
  • Crowds have been documented at pantries around the country.
  • In several locations, public facility parking lots were converted into assistance centers.

State Emergency Measures

Several states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, issued crisis measures to allocate short-term money for assistance. However, these allocations were expected to be a limited percentage of the regular government funding.

The federal expenditures for SNAP total approximately $8 billion monthly across the United States.
