Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
