RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
